| Introduction to the Standards |
|
Conforming to recognized standards in managing cataloguing records and other digital record
storage is important for the purpose of resource sharing accross library databases.
In Union Catalogue, we are using Machine Readable Cataloguing Format (MARC), and all our
records are stored in according to this internationally recognized cataloguing standard.
The information from a catalogue card cannot simply be typed into a computer to produce an
automated catalogue. The computer needs a means of interpreting the information found on a
cataloguing record. The MARC record contains a guide to its data, or little "signposts" ,
before each piece of bibliographic information. More details on MARC will be mentioned in
this section.
