Example: Subject Heading & Classification for Electronic Data


  1. Find out the main topic about the CD-ROM.


  2. This CD-ROM is about the bibliography records in Malaysia.


  3. The subject heading for this source could be written as




  4. In DDC22, we look for the subject heading - bibliography that is issued at a certain place.


  5. This will lead you to the subject heading - “Bibligraphies and Catalogs of works by a specified country or person”.


  6. Then, we need to find the code for Malaysia. Each country / place has their own code. We can look up the code from Table 2 in DDC Volume 1.


  7. So the call number for this item is




  8. Notes:
    i) Table 2 in DDC Volume 1 provides most of the codes for places in a certain country. For example, the code for Sarawak, Malaysia is 595 4.
    ii) Since there is no specified author, so the first three letter from the title is taken. Therefore, we have “MAL” after "/".
