| Introduction Library of Congress Subject Headings |
|
The Library of Congress Subject Headings system (referred to as LCSH) was originally designed as a controlled
vocabulary for representing the subject and form of the books and serials in the Library of
Congress collection, with the purpose of providing subject access points to the
bibliographic records contained in the Library of Congress catalogues.
Subject Headings are the very specific terms or phrases used by libraries to describe what a given
book or article is about. In order to have these terms/phrases be consistent, most libraries use the
subject headings defined by the Library of Congress.
The LCSH books provide alternative terms and phrases that assist library patrons in locating books, periodicals,
AV software, and vertical file information on the desired subjects. As a result, everyone can generally find
relevant materials by using the LCSH to define the search terms.
